Welcome to EEG Unit
The Federal Neuro-psychiatric Hospital, Yaba EEG department is equipped with 2(two) state-of-the-art computerized electroencephalography system with the capacity to record up to 64 channels of EEG data to serve both Yaba and her annex at Oshodi. The department started its operation since August 2000. The service delivery is daily Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm.
An EEG or electroencephalogram (e-lek-tro-en-sef-ah-lo-gram) is a recording of the electrical activity of the brain (everyone has it), called brain waves. An EEG measures brain waves through small button electrodes that are placed on the scalp. What is an electroencephalogram (EEG)?
What do EEG’s show? How does it help the doctor diagnose your problems?
By looking at the shape, frequency and height of the waves, the doctor can tell whether the brain is healthy or not. In
some cases, these studies provide the ability to diagnose and classify epileptic and non-epileptic seizures without
requiring a hospital admission.
What does EEG do or the Uses?
An EEG is a neurophysiologic technique primarily used in
- the evaluation of epilepsy (or possible epilepsy),
- headaches,
- behavioral disturbances,
- attention and learning disorders
- language delay,
- developmental delay,
- Find out if a person who is in a coma is brain-dead.
- Study sleep disorders, such as narcolepsy
- Fainting spells as this may be spelt out in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, loss of consciousness.
- An EEG is an important test used worldwide to detect neurological abnormalities in children.
What Next
What happens when you come to the laboratory?
A specially trained technologist will be with you throughout the test and give you instructions as needed. The following activities will occur during your visit to the laboratory:
Before the EEG
- Explain the test procedure to you or your child
- Give advice on how to plait your hair/ cut the hair low or Shampoo your child's hair.
- Do not use any hair spray, oil or cream. Any pieces or weaves must be taken out.
- You / Your child may eat and / or drink as usual but not any caffeine drink.
- You may bring your child's favorite toy and / or security item such as a blanket.
- For a sleep deprived EEG, your child may go to bed at his / her normal time. You should then awaken your
- child at the following suggested times:
- Under 3 years old: awaken at 4 am
- 3-11 years old: awaken at 2 am
- 12 years and older: awaken at 3 am
During the EEG
You or your child will be shown what will happen. Electrodes (referred to as buttons, with wires) are placed on areasof the head with cream, after cleaning each area with a cotton tip.
The electrodes are hooked by wires to a computer that records the electrical activity inside the brain. A Computerized machine will show the activity as a series of wavy lines drawn on the computer screen. .
The recording section of the EEG takes about 30 minutes. You would not be allowed to talk to the technologist unless you need to. The technologist will watch you directly during the test. You will be asked to get comfortable, close your eyes and relax, body
movement will be restrained to minimized artifacts At certain times, you will be asked to open and close your eyes (do this only when asked), the recording may be stopped from time to time to allow you to stretch and reposition yourself and to breathe deeply for about 3-4 minutes. Also, the strobe light will be flashed off and on for a few minutes during one section of the test. The technologist may ask parents to hold younger children during the test in order to get a better recording. Other visitors can wait in-the waiting room.
After the EEG
After the test, the electrodes are removed and a wet wash cloth is used to clean the hair and scalp. There might still be some electrode cream/paste that will need to be washed out at home. After the test, your child/ you /can resume his / her normal activities.
A Consultant specialized in reading EEG will interpret the test results. Your doctor will then tell you the results of your test or the report might be sent to the doctor or clinic on request. Results from the test can take up to 3-5 business days.

The EEG has been used for many years and is considered a safe procedure. The test causes no discomfort. The electrodes only record activity and do not produce any sensation. In addition, safety measures are in place to prevent you from getting an electric shock.
NB: An EEG should not be confused with electroshock (electroconvulsive therapy i.e. ECT). If you have a seizure disorder such as epilepsy, a seizure may be triggered by the flashing lights or by hyperventilation. If this occurs, the technologist is trained to take care of you during the seizure.

The department is well staffed and headed by a competent, well experienced and internationally trained EEG Technologist - Mr. Isiaka AMOO, MBA; complementing his effort for quality service are, two (2) trained EEG technologist and other dedicated supporting staff. The laboratory is well equipped with two (2) functional latest 64 channel computerized Nihon Kohden EEG
Computerized machine in a serene environment void of distraction and well- illuminated.
