LIBRARY SERVICES
The hundred year old hospital is situated in the Lagos metropolis, the main hospital being in Yaba while the annex is located in Oshodi. It has fifteen wards and three hundred and fifty seven beds space for admission of patients. The hospital provides comprehensive psychiatric services for patients. These services are provided by mental health professionals that include medical doctors, nurses, social welfare officers, occupational therapists, psychologists, pharmacist, library professionals and laboratory scientist. It also has administrative officers, accountants, auditor and I.T professionals.
The library is located on the first floor of a story building at the centre of the hospital and it is divided into 4 sections:
- Readers’ Services Section: this comprises of Circulation and Reference units.
- Technical Services Section: Acquisition, Cataloguing & Classification, Serials and Gifts and Donations.
- Research and Bibliographic Section: This caters for all aspects of research needs of users. The collections are basically proposals, theses and dissertations of users submitted and accepted by the hospital’s ethical committee. It also houses archives and special collections of the hospital.
- Automation Services Section: This section oversees all ICT driven services in the library.
The library has 6 units which are: Circulation, Cataloguing, Acquisition, Serial, Reference, Reserved and Binding.
The resources in the library are books, journals and electronic materials. The library has access to Research4Life (HINARI, OARE, AGORA ARDI and GOALI), Medline, PUBMED and High wire etc. Apart from the physical books and journals on the shelves, e-journals, e-books, recordings and other archival materials can be found in the library.
The following services are rendered by the library
Literature search , Patients’ library service, Reference service, Library orientation, Loan request, Training / Lecture, Outreach service etc.
Presently, the staff strength of the library is 17 with 5 Professional Librarians.
Over the years, the Federal Neuropsychiatric hospital library has gone through a period of expansion and development geared to meet the needs of the hospital community to attract the general public to the study centre as part of its psychiatric destigmatization strategies.
Core responsibility of the library is to meet the needs of the established Federal School of Occupational Therapy and School of Post Basic Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing to the already existing Postgraduate Residency Training in Psychiatry and the patients. The library is categorized as a special library.
Hours of Opening is as follows:-
- Mondays – Fridays 8.00am – 8.00pm
- Saturdays 10.00am – 6.00pm
- Sundays and public holidays (closed)
